  • What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?

  • Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a comprehensive and systematic medical paradigm that has evolved over 2000 years. It is based on several concepts including Qi [pronounced chee], Yin, and Yang. TCM has a variety of techniques at its disposal to aid in the process of healing.

  • What is Qi, Yin, Yang, and Meridians?

  • Qi is an intangible force that animates the material world. Qi is every cell of the body and courses through the body in meridians or channels. The smooth and unobstructed flow of Qi is essential to good health.

Yin and Yang are relative opposites yet they are interdependent. Yin represents the quiescent, cold, and dim aspects while yang represents the moving, hot, and bright aspects. Achieving a balance between yin and yang is fundamental to maintaining good health.

Meridians are the pathways that carry Qi and unify all parts of the body.

  • What is acupuncture?

  • Acupuncture is a technique that restores the body’s balance of Qi, Yin, and Yang by inserting fine sterile needles into points along the meridians.

  • What can acupuncture treat?

  • Musculoskeletal conditions: Pain, including pain due to arthritis, neuralgia, sciatica, bursitis, tendonitis, Bell's Palsy, headache, traumatic injury.

Internal conditions: Asthma, hypertension, diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders such as ulcers, colitis, indigestion, diarrhea, constipation, IBS, hemorrhoids.

Dermatological conditions: Eczema, acne, herpes, other types of skin rashes.

Genitourinary and gynecological conditions: Infertility, PMS, PID, menstrual disorders (lack of, painful and irregular menstruation), menopause, painful urination, frequent urination.

Other conditions: Colds/flu, bronchitis, sinus infections, anxiety, depression, insomnia, tinnitus, earaches, allergies, dizziness.

  • How do herbs apply to Chinese Medicine?

  • Plant, mineral, and animal substances can restore the body's balance of Qi, Yin, and Yang.

  • What are some of these other words I hear every now and then? TuiNa? QiGong? Moxabustion?

  • TuiNa is a Chinese medical massage that utilizes several different hand techniques. It manipulates the flow of Qi.

QiGong, or TaiChi/TaiJi, is a technique of still and moving meditation that cultivates Qi and harmonizes the flow of Qi in the body.

Moxabustion is a technique that employs the use of Chinese mugwort burned over specific acupuncture points or along channels to warm, tonify, stimulate, or harmonize the flow of Qi in the body.

  • What is cupping?

  • Cupping is a technique that involves the vacuum suction of glass globes to remove obstructions that prevent the smooth flow of Qi.

  • I do not do well with needles. Will I survive?

  • I am sensitive to any needle phobia you may have. But, fear not! The acupuncture needles I use are thinner than a hair. Expect to feel something in the range of nothing (yes, nothing--there are points where you will not even notice I am treating you there) to a slight pinch.

  • Are your needles clean?

  • Each of my needles is new--individually packaged or in a pack of 10. They are also factory sterilized. I use each needle only once and then dispose it.
